Discerning in Community

“Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in their midst.”

— Matthew 18:18-20

Teaching the Word Ministries (TTWM) embraces a presence-based discernment process as the posture from which we approach all relationships, partnerships and client interests.   As the above text teaches, the Church in all its dimensions (local churches, businesses, families, non-profit ministries) is made to be a discerning body, releasing and loosing the heart and mind of Christ.  When brothers and sisters in Christ agree that Christ is not only present, but also central, they receive the ability to walk in the wisdom and will of God.  Discernment is an extension of grace that allows believers to confidently make decisions that are aligned with God and then walk in their purpose, vision and mission.

shaping culture

From this presence-based posture, the essence of the work of TTWM is assisting organizations in the creation of healthier leadership cultures, specifically in churches, non-profit groups, and businesses. Leadership is the influence that shapes culture -- the shared attitudes, values, goals and practices of an organization or group. Whether setting the trajectory of a new organization or addressing mission drift and conflicting values within existing organizations, cultural vitality can be established.

growing leaders

As an outside team coming alongside leadership teams of churches, non-profits and businesses, TTWM offers objectivity, experience, wisdom and foundational insight that nurtures individual leaders and teams of leaders by diving deep into their leadership culture(s) – specifically minding the inherent assumptions and values – and bringing the presence and wisdom of Christ and His Word to the center.

Typically, this nurturing and strengthening of leaders and leadership teams takes the shape of one or more of these dynamics:

teaching

Fundamental change, foundation building, and organic health happen on a truth level.  TTWM offers sound perspective and creative ways of thinking with God about the Scriptures. This includes models for leadership, paradigms for growth, nurturing intimate connections with God, foundational kingdom principles, and unique perspectives for navigating oft-encountered roadblocks.

mentoring

The way spiritual life flows to leaders is person to person. Reading, schooling, and attending conferences are good, yet biblical and Spirit-led mentoring primarily happens today the same as it did two thousand years ago: life-on-life, person to person. TTWM serves its clients with a transformative approach where mentoring and education unfolds beyond scholastic or professionalized structures in real-time relationship and discipleship of leaders.

Conflict resolution

If conflict is appropriately embraced when it occurs, it can be a significant force for positive spiritual change. TTWM seeks to minister person to person in places of conflict by listening to God's wisdom from a perspective outside of those directly involved. We aid them in discerning what God is communicating in the situation so that the fruit of change through conflict will be healthy and not destructive.

Local Church Visioning & Design

God has a calling and a purpose for each local congregation in the Body of Christ. TTWM comes alongside local congregations to bring perspective and wisdom. We enjoy assisting churches in uncovering, recovering, discovering and growing in their unique calling, and we also seek to discover how that calling interfaces with the broader kingdom of God in that local congregation’s region.

Spiritual Direction

Spiritual direction, a part of spiritual formation, is effective for spiritual maturation and allows for exploration of relationship with God in practical life. It encompasses clarifying desires and decisions, noting invitations, growing with God in transitions, investigating God questions, identifying hopes and dreams or finding a way with God through suffering and trials. Space is opened so one has opportunity to see our self-revealing God at work. Learning to “Be still and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10 gives place for absorbing God’s presence more deeply.
